The following photos are from Santa Tecla, aka New San Salvador.

 

This day was particularly difficult because much of the destruction here was unnecessary.
Santa Tecla landslide.jpg (25142 bytes) This image is from a landslide that buried hundreds of people. There were rows of houses in the clearing that were wiped out.

 

The people who lived there had been protesting for months against the building of very upscale homes into the mountain. Although the mayor's office did not given permission, the houses were built anyway, cutting into the mountain to do it. This is what caused the landslide, and hundreds of people who lived below to be buried alive. Now they are truly voiceless.

This is a different angle of the same landslide. It is standing at the foot of the mountain.

The photo above is from the very top of the mountain where the landslide began. You can see how much of a section of a very urban area was taken out. I believe over 400 people lost their lives from this landslide.
