ABOUT THE INITIATIVE

LAND USE EDUCATION, RESEARCH
AND OUTREACH INITIATIVE
AT GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY

Faculty and staff of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) have played an important leadership role in assisting local decision-makers in West Michigan area for many years.  Recognizing that land use decision-making is an important and even vital component to our quality of life in West Michigan, faculty and staff from GVSU wish to more effectively contribute from an institutional perspective to the greater understanding about land use issues prevalent in West Michigan.

To address these issues, People and Land program funding has designated Dr. Richard Jelier, associate professor in the School of Public and Nonprofit Administration to facilitate in a multi- institutional, multi-disciplinary consortium that will deliver research results relevant to effective policy making and local intergovernmental cooperation in Michigan’s Metropolitan area.  The Michigan Higher Education Land Policy Consortium (MIHELP) will focus on those metropolitan issues that block or deny healthy growth in urban areas and their surrounding regions.  It will particularly address those issues associated with linkages between cities and their immediate and outlying neighbors.

In spite of this significant presence and continued commitment to service in West Michigan, Grand Valley State University has never formally structured its considerable emerging resources with the specific purpose to focus and facilitate better land use practices. The MIHELP Consortium provides Grand Valley State University with this unique opportunity to collaborate with other institutions on land use issues that impact the State of Michigan. The current collaboration includes the select departments from Michigan State University, Wayne State University, Public Sector Consultants, and Grand Valley State University.  In order for this Consortium to be successful, it truly must be a participatory process.  Many departments have already been involved directly or indirectly in land use policy.
