Summer Study Programs

Program of Study

Olympic City, Sydney, Australia, with a population of more than 4 million, and covering almost 700 square miles, is a remarkably easy city to move around in.  Excellent train, bus and ferry service cover all points of the greater metropolitan area. Sydney enjoys a temperate climate and has more than 340 sunny days a year.

Sydney’s cultural and natural sites are beyond compare. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Taronga Park Zoo, the famous Sydney Harbor Bridge, The Rocks (often described as “Sydney’s Outdoor Museum”), art galleries, numerous museums, historical structures, and vibrant neighborhoods all lay claim to the fine cultural fare in Sydney. Some claim that the harbor is Sydney, and on a warm day, with a clear blue sky, there is no better place on earth!

Classes will take place at Macquarie University, located 15 km north of downtown. The campus consists of 100 hectares of beautiful rolling hills with stands of eucalyptus trees and large open areas.

Prerequisites
None.

Eligibility
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. (undergraduates) or 3.0 (graduates). Successful application and two letters of recommendation.

Academic Credit
Students will register for a total of 6 credits:
3 Cr.: PA 380 or PA 680
Australian Growth and Development

All students are required to enroll in this class taught by Australian faculty. Lectures, visits to sites of historic and cultural interest in the Sydney area, and field trips will be conducted to areas of cultural interest such as the nation’s capital in Canberra, Sydney 2000 Olympic Stadium, Macquarie University Marsupial Park, and a Turramurra Bush Walk /Aboriginal Art.

Living Arrangements
Program participants will be housed from late June through July at fully catered apartments on the campus of Macquarie in New South Wales.

Dates and Deadlines
This five week session will take place from approximately June 28 to July 29, 2005. You may begin the application process for this program by visiting www.gvsu.edu/sa. Applications for the program are due by January 15, 2005. A $100 deposit is due at the time of application. There is limited space available.

*Fee subject to adjustments based on actual exchange rates and international airfare.

Financial Aid
ALL students considering study abroad should have their financial aid reevaluated regardless of whether they are currently receiving federal aid. Additional need-based study abroad grants are also available to eligible students. Early application for financial aid is strongly recommended.
