Getting Files from the SGI's to a PC

There are several ways to get a file from the sgi's to a personal computer. Two methods are described below, via e-mail and via ftp.

Via E-mail: This describes what I think is the easiest way: Mail the file to yourself as an attachment, and then go to a PC or Mac and open your mail. Save the attachment as a file on your personal computer.

1. Open your directory's folder, on the sgi desktop. This folder will be labeled with your username.

2. Search down in your directory system until you find the file you want to transfer to the PC.

3. On the sgi, in the upper left menu deck, choose "Internet" and then "Open Browser". Enter the URL for your e-mail program. Send mail to yourself, and use your e-mail program to attach the desired file to the e-mail.

  1. On a PC or Mac, log into your e-mail program, find the mail you've sent, and save the attachment as a file.

Via FTP: On the personal computer, open an FTP program, such as WinFTP for PC's or Fetch for Mac's. Open a connection using the IP address of the sgi, followed by your sgi username, such as

felix.chm.gvsu.edu/~smithj (Get the exact address from your instructor.)

5. You should see a list of your files on the sgi. Drag the file you want from your sgi to the PC window. You may have to choose whether it is a "Text" or a "Binary" file being transferred. (If you can read the file in a text editor, it is a "Text" file. Else it is "Binary". Image files are generally binary.)
