VII.  Balance - the distribution of visual weights in a design. It is apparent that we desire balance. When a composition seems to be weighted too heavily on one side, the effect is disturbing. Types of balance include
 
Symmetrical (formal) Near Symmetrical Asymmetrical (informal)
Radial Overall Pattern
(equal emphasis everywhere)
 
Although asymmetry is achieved by a delicate balance of many opposing visual elements and forces, any one of the following could be emphasized to the point of becoming the major factor in achieving balance:
 
Shape or Volume Color or Value
Texture or Pattern Size
Direction Direction
Position
When working representationally, psychological importance can become a factor in balancing a composition. For example: all other things being equal, the human figure would have more visual weight than a chair.
