One semester down… a lifetime to go

Congratulations on making it through your first semester of Japanese language study! While learning a language is a lifelong journey and you have taken only the first few steps, think about how far you have come since the beginning of spring semester. You have done so much more than simply memorize words in Japanese: the kana writing system which had seemed so foreign is now a familiar tool and many of the conventions of Japanese grammar have become second nature to you. In the second semester we will build on that foundation as you expand the range of your language options with more difficult grammatical structures, greater vocabulary, and more kanji.

The primary language of this class is Japanese. With the exception of some grammar explanation, the instructor will give instruction, make classroom commands, ask questions, etc. in Japanese and you are asked to do the same, whether speaking to the instructor or to your fellow students. You will not always be able to express yourself perfectly or understand everything the instructor says, and that is to be expected. Communication using the target language is vital, and some of the most important skills for achieving fluency are expressing yourself using whatever language is available to you and interpreting general meaning from context despite incomplete understanding. If you find yourself completely unable to understand without resorting to English, save your questions for after class or during office hours. Rest assured that important deadlines, etc. will be made clear by the instructor.

This course continues to use the Genki I textbook and workbook you began in JPN 101. During this semester, we will work through the remaining six chapters of the textbook, lessons 7-12. The primary sources for course schedule, daily assignments, resources for self-study and links to useful learning tools are this website and the Blackboard site for this course.

Grades will be evaluated as follows:
  Participation
Homework
Six Kanji/Vocab Quizzes
Six ChapterTests
Final Exam
Writing/Speaking practice

10%
15%
6 x 2% = 12%
6 x 7% = 42%
15%
6-12%

Regular attendance and active participation are vital to successfully learning a language, and thus it counts for a large portion of your final grade. The “Participation” grade includes attendance, but it does not mean simply showing up for class. Rather, you should come to class prepared and ready to make an active contribution. Before each class, you should read the sections of the textbook specified on the class schedule and listen to the corresponding audio files, memorize new vocabulary and dialogues and be ready to use them in class, and complete the homework for that day. Whenever new material is introduced in class, it is expected that you will have already encountered that material through your own preparation. For every missed class, regardless of reason, your participation grade will drop. Always complete the assigned homework, even if you are not confident of your accuracy; if you perform poorly on a homework assignment, you may redo it and turn it in for credit, but you may not redo assignments that were not turned in by the deadline. For each of the six lessons, a speaking or writing assignment is due by 5pm on Friday, the day after the chapter test. You may choose which of these to do, or you may do both of them for extra credit. For the speaking assignment, you will use the DiLL program in the LRC to record yourself speaking and in some cases you will need to do so with a partner. Writing assignments must be typed in Japanese and either submitted via e-mail or printed out and slipped under the instructor's office door. For each of the six lessons, there will be a kanji/vocabulary quiz during the first fifteen minutes of class on the second Monday of each chapter and a chapter test for the entire class period on the final day of each chapter.

Some of the greatest resources you have are your fellow students. You are strongly encouraged to collaborate with your classmates in practicing dialogues, doing homework assignments, preparing teaching projects, studying for exams, etc. However, copying other students’ work, using student materials from previous years, or otherwise submitting the work of others as one’s own is plagiarism and will result in an automatic F for the course.
