In "The Image of Misfortune" Onetti centers on the feelings of guilt and remorse that the protagonist experiences at the suicide death of his brother Julian. Discuss how the protagonist deals with his brother’s death and the way in which Onetti presents and develops his story. 

Consider the following:

1. Characterization:

a. What is the relationship between Julian and the protagonist? What are they like physically, emotionally and psychologically? Why does the protagonist feel responsible for his brother’s suicide?

b. Who is Arturo? Betty? What is their role in the story?

c. Who is the girl? How is she presented? What is her relationship to the protagonist?

2. Point of view. Who tells the story? From what perspective? Why is the story told from this perspective?

3. Setting. What role does the setting play in the work? The description of the beach, the storm, etc?

4. What is the significance of the title?
