Dream Journal (excerpt)

I’m drinking at a bar with my friends, and I look at my watch to see it’s one in the morning. I tell everybody I have to leave. I start walking out of the bar and I look down at what I’m wearing. I have a wedding dress on. I look in the windows of the buildings I’m passing to see how I look. I get in my car and it’s snowing really heavily, so it’s hard to drive. I can barely reach the pedals because my dress is in the way. I get to Market Street and I’m swerving all over the road. I just get to the Holland exit to go home, and I see a car down in the ditch within the trees. I stop my car. I grab my cell phone and call the police. They ask for directions and I tell them to look for me in my wedding dress. I get off the phone and out of the car. I walk down into the ditch and knock on the window. I see a woman inside with her head lying against the steering wheel. I knock again and she turns her head to face me. She opens the window and I jump back a bit. She looks a lot like me only much older. I ask her is she’s all right. She says her back hurts and she bumped her head. I tell her that there is help coming. She says, “congratulations.” I ask her what happened, but she falls unconscious. I run up the hill when I see a cop car coming. I reach the top and the police car stops. A man gets out dressed in a tuxedo. He asks me if I’m all right and I tell him yes, but the woman at the bottom of the hill isn’t. I ask him, “Are you the one I am supposed to marry?” and he says, “yes,” then I wake up.

I’m driving down the highway. I’m not in my car but a big, black truck. It’s raining really hard. I can barely see the road. There are no other cars on the road. I see people walking along the side of the road. I look down at the passenger seat and I see my camera. I grab it and unroll the passenger side window. I start taking pictures of each person I see. I stop suddenly at a red light. I put my camera down and the window back up. I start hearing large thud sounds coming from all over my truck. I open the window and see the rain stopped and now these large books are falling from the sky. I stick my hand out of the window to see if I can catch one. Finally I get one in my grasp. I bring my arm back in the window and read the cover of the book. It says BIBLE. The light turns green and I put the gas peddle to the floor. I drive until I see Meijer. I get out of the car and bring the film from my camera in. I stand and watch the women develop my film. I tell her it’s raining Bibles and she just laughs at me. She hands me my pictures and I run out back to my truck. It’s still raining Bibles. I jump in and close the door quickly. I look down at my pictures. Every picture is blurry but the faces of each person are my own. I go through each one finding the same thing. I get angry and throw them out the window. I find my way home and walk in the door to my parent’s house. I look up and see each of the pictures blown up and hanging from the walls. I run out of the house….I wake up.
