Surrealist Text (excerpt)

(Editor’s note: These “narratives” were based on a process of fusing together disparate fragments of story and dialogue encountered while channel surfing. The inspiration for this project was the early Surrealist practice of wandering in and out of movies in progress, allowing the different film fragments to merge into one hybridized narrative.)

Two police officers walk up to a house armed and ready. They expect back up to come in a couple of minutes. They are there to arrest a wanted criminal named Kevin Richards. They have dealt with Richards before.

Lieutenant: This could be our shot.

Miller: How are you sure we got a shot?

L: Have I ever lead you down the wrong path before?

The men break down the door. They split up. The Lt. finds Richards first.

L: (cuffing Richards) Kevin Richards I’m placing you under arrest for violating your restraining order and trespassing…

Richards: (unlocks the handcuffs) Do you really think you can do this? (Tosses cuffs aside.)

L: (Pulls out his gun keeping Richards at bay) Michael can you hear me? (Michael enters.) How did he do that? (pointing to dismantled handcuffs).

M: Don’t you remember, you helped me write it.

L: (referring to Richards) He’s helping me with some of my problems but obviously not all of them….

Richards sensing fear, tries to take the Lt.’s gun.

M: (takes action, points gun at Richards) Bayer is the only pain release that can save your life!

R: (stops causing trouble, relaxes, hands up) I don’t get the connection. (panics) This is all happening so quick!…
