This bowl was carved from
butternut. It measures 9-1/4" long, 6-1/2" wide, and 3" deep. After cutting
the shape out on a band saw, I screwed a piece of wood to the bowl side and
used that to clamp the block in a vise. I rounded the sides to the base,
using a drawknife, a large chisel and gouge (see below). I finished by rough
sanding it (60 grit) with a sanding block. |

I removed the block from the
bowl side and then drilled a series of holes using Forstner bits to begin
hollowing the bowl. |
 |
I then began removing wood out
to the inner rim of the bowl using a variety of gouges and chisels. |
 |
 |
At this point, I removed even
more wood along the inner rim of the bowl to narrow the sides, cutting down
about an inch. Then I used a curved chisel to remove the rest of the
material and round the walls to the inner base. |
 |
Next, I began removing
more wood inside at the bottom to deepen the bowl. Dog leg gouges (see
below) allowed me to remove a large amount of wood in short order, and I
used long handled "spoon" knives to shape the base of the inside walls. |
 |
 |
Next, I sanded the bowl inside
and out, using 100, then 200 grit sandpaper. I then used scrapers to put on
the final finish. |
 |
Finally, I coated the bowl with
mineral oil to bring out the grain and preserve the bowl. |
