Grass War! Peasant Struggle in Brazil A documentary video by Cliff Welch and Toni Perrine. (VHS, 34 min. 2001.) Winner of the CINE Golden Eagle (2002) and LASA Award of Merit (2001)
In 1959, some 800 families resisted efforts to kick them off their remote farms. One peasant leader-–Jofre Correa Netto, pictured above-–became known as the "Fidel Castro of the Brazilian Backlands" and was shot. The Grass War gained wide attention and became a significant marker of the long history of struggle against social inequality in Brazil, demonstrated currently by the Landless Laborers' Movement (MST). JOFRE IMPRESSES FANS AT THE PREMIERE! More than 250 people met Jofre Correa Netto and attended the premiere of Grass War at Grand Valley State University's Loosemore Auditorium on April 19, 2001. "They tried to kill me," Jofre said, "but now there are thousands of Jofres all over Brazil, fighting for land." REVIEW BY JOHN T.
