These children live in the village of El Mozote in the province of Morazon. El Mozote is a village in the mountains where an entire village was massacred in 1980. Hundreds of innocent people, most children and women, were held captive and systematically tortured and executed by government forces. This is the memorial that stands in honor of those who died. The wall lists the names that could be recalled. Because it was an entire village, it was left to the one survivor and surrounding communities to remember the names. Many entries are listed as "son of..." or "sister to..." |
