Munising Falls

Station 1

The Munising Falls are located a short 800 feet walk from a nearby parking lot through a shaded trail. There are three observation decks to view the 50 foot falls.

The map at the left shows the topography of the local area. Notice the contour line patterns at Munising Falls and the surrounding area.

The Munising Falls is mainly of Miner's Castle Member of the Munising Formation. It is a tan sandstone with cross laminations, cross beds and small iron concretions.

In the photo to the left, notice the thick layers of sandstone from the Munising Formation that are behind the falls, and then the bench in which the falls are landing. To see other views of the falls, click here.

The sandstone we can describe here as being a very clean quartz arenite. This is part of the Miner's Castle Member of the Munising Formation. The Au Train is not visible, but supposedly caps the waterfall.

The video below provides an overview of the Munising Falls and a geologic overview of the local area.

On the upper right observation deck of the falls, we see many detailed features of the sandstone. The photo below shows cross laminations changing directions in the Miner's Castle Member of Munising Formation.

Why do you think the small cross laminations change direction? The video(or ripple site) provided below describes these remarkable features in more detail.

(video?)

Here is an example of an iron concretion found within the sandstone. Notice the red oxidized color. These are often found scattered through sandstones.
